What is leadership? Every author or speaker has a favorite definition. Each offers a different perspective on this most important subject.
Consider two definitions:
- Leadership is motivating and enabling people to reach toward a common objective or vision.
- Leadership is taking responsibility while others are making excuses.
I offer a definition:
“Leadership is an amazing, complex, simple, and intensely difficult effort to guide people to achieve a common objective. Leadership requires intense, vision driven effort.” (Dr. Mike Friesz)
It is amazingly simple, but complex. It is a challenge. As difficult as leadership is it is not complicated.
To provide leadership, it is necessary that a common objective, or vision be established. Without vision leadership is nothing. Where are you going?
When these factors come together, there is the potential for a powerful change. Winston Churchill said: "There comes a special moment in everyone’s life, a moment for which that person was born. That special opportunity, when he seizes it, will fulfill his mission—a mission for which he is uniquely qualified. In that moment he finds greatness. It is his finest hour.” born. That special opportunity, when he seizes it, will fulfill his mission—a mission for which he is uniquely qualified. In that moment he finds greatness. It is his finest hour.”
